It seems like my brother and I were destined to become Yorkshire horse trainers. Horses have always been my life from a young age, from riding as a child and becoming an amateur jockey when I turned 16. I then took a keen interest in becoming a trainer and assisted my father for many years. It was a great achievement when Borderlescott won the Nunthorpe, twice for my father.
I took over the licence in 2015. Results:
- 2015 – 8 winners
- 2016 – 15 winners
- 2017 – 22 winners
- 2018 – 27 winners
I’ve learnt much of my experience from working with some of the best trainers in Australia, Dubai and Ireland, which has taught me a great deal. I do love turning my horses out every afternoon, it mentally and physically does them the world of good. It takes them back to being horses again and you can see how happy they are, it can improve their performance no end.
My brother Harvey Bastiman is my assistant who has also been in racing all his life. He was a dual purpose jockey for over 15 years. He worked in America as a work rider and also in Australia, his input is vital to me. We work great as a team, we decide where they are running, fitness of the horse, well-being and monitor every race after they’ve run. Plus many, many other things to bring the best out of every horse in our facilities. But we can’t do all this ourselves we have a great hard working team of Yorkshire horse trainers behind us, who love the horses as if they were their own.
